Cui non audita est obscenae Salmacis unda?
Cuius rei rationem oetae ad huiusmodi fabulam referunt. Salmacidem Nympham scil. fuisse fonti huic praesidentem, quae Hermaphroditi, Mercurii et Veneris filii, pueri formosissimi, amore capta, cum nullis eum blanditiis ad concubitum posset adducere, simulatô discessu sese post vepres occultavit: cumque vidisset illum, qui solum se esse existimabat, positis vestibus, fontem ingressum esse, subito accurrens, abiectis indumentis arctissime cum complexa est. Verum cum ne sic quidem obstinatum iuvenis animum posset inflectere, a Superis dicitur petiisse; ut ex duobus corporibus in unum redigerentur. Quibus precibus vix finitis, ambo unum in corpus coaluerunt, ita tamen ut sexus uterque remaneret integer. Quam corporis sui mutationem cernens Hermaphroditus parentes suos dicitur invoâsse, et ab iis summi muneris locô petiisse, ut ea fonti natura maneret, ut qui vir eum ingrederetur, ἀνδρόγυνος, h. c. utrumque sexum habens, inde exiret.
